Summary
Edward becomes enraged after running into Roy Mustang frying Lt. Ross to a crisp, then realizes that Roy lied to him about Maes Hughes moving to the country instead of being murdered. Winry comes across a newspaper story about Hugh’s death just as Ed is attacking Roy. When Alphonse catches up with Ed and Roy, he detains his brother and demands an explanation. Mustang repeats that the orders regarding Ross, who was convicted of murder and then escaped capture, were to shoot to kill on sight. On the rooftops overlooking the gruesome scene below, Barry and Lin Yao mention something about things not going according to plan, but then acknowledge that with the police converging on the scene, they have a choice but to run.The military police arrive to take control of what’s left of the escaped convict, while the leading officer berates Roy for using too much force in regards to frying Ross, as the body is now almost unrecognizable.Later at the morgue, Major Armstrong apologizes to the boys for not telling them about Hughes’ death sooner. Ed begins to feel responsible for the death since he was the one who implicated Maes in the first place. Major Armstrong assures him that it’s not his fault. The coroner completes the autopsy and also charges Colonel Mustang with excessive force. Armstrong apologizes to Col. for his subordinate and then collapses in grief. Mustang suggests that Armstrong take some time off to recover from the recent events and suggests that he head east to the area where Col. was stationed.Meanwhile, Barry has returned to the safe house and Vato dresses him down for going out in public and risking getting caught. He is also not happy about Lin Yao being brought back to the safe house. Outside in the courtyard, Lin is busy making smoke signals with the fireplace at the breakfast cook. Smoke signals lead Lin’s bodyguards, Lan Fan and Fu, right to him, much to Vato’s dismay.Ed and Al return to their cabin to tell Winry about Mae’s death, but when they find her not there, they realize that she already learned about the death from the newspaper Ed left behind. Meanwhile, Winry found her way to the Hughes house. She is greeted at the door by Elicia, who thinks her father has returned, and Gracia. Al and Ed are back in their cabins waiting for Winry to return when they get a call from Gracia saying that Winry is in bad shape at her house and they should come pick her up. They arrive at the Hughes house to pick up Winry, but Ed and Al decide to tell Gracia Hughes why her husband was killed. They tell her that Maes was most likely killed while researching the Philosopher’s Stone for Ed and Al in an attempt to warn the brothers and prevent them from getting involved further. Both brothers consider giving up on the search for answers when Gracia tells them that if they do, her husband has died for nothing. He encourages them to keep trying to find a solution, even if the Philosopher’s Stone is not the solution.After the three return to their hotel, both Ed and Winry continue to wallow in their sorrows. Ed goes to Winry’s room to get her to eat something. While she was visiting Gracie and Elicia, she took the time to bake an apple pie. Now he brings it up and the two empathize.Elsewhere, Lust, Envy, and Gluttony discuss that their plans for Roy didn’t go as planned. Another thing they didn’t expect was Barry Chopper showing up to free Ross from prison. Lust is not happy that Barry is still around and decides to send Barry’s old body, uninhabited by another soul, after him.
